professor… what’s another word for pirate treasure?

records are dead.
record stores are dead.
everyone’s been falling all over
themselves for years to talk about this.
‘the future is downloading’, ‘people don’t have the attention span’
‘no one cares’… and blah. blah. blah.
we ARE moving to a new frontier, sure…
but apparently no one told my wallet.

making up for lost time in australia,
i went extra ape shit at ameoba on tuesday…
here’s a list.
some are new, some are old…
all are very much mine now.

erin mckeown- hundreds of lions
nellie mckay- normal as blueberry pie (a tribute to doris day!)
gossip- music for men
morrissey- swords (bought for B, truth told… but always worth having)
arctic monkeys- humbug
fun- aim and ignite
INXS- X
tegan and sara- sainthood
crowded house- crowded house
talking heads- naked
erykah badu- baduizm (which i once owned, then sold back. this happens a lot)
roxy music- avalon (which i only have on cassette… oh, for shame)
noah and the whole- first day of spring
REM- live at olympia/dublin.
train- save me, san francisco
drivin n’ cryin- fly me courageous (another hold over from cassette)
7 worlds collide- the sun came out
sly and the family stone- there’s a riot going on’
(on vinyl, btw. like it was intended)

The new Train is different but I really like it! You opened for them at the Greek in Berkeley the first time I saw you. I was hooked…

I see the costume changes now: smoking jacket and pipe to pimpfits and fros. Ah, such diversity.

i don’t think i’ll ever be able to give up on my physical CDs or on my vinyl.

i don’t know if you listen to mae, but the music aside, a few years back they put out an album called the everglow. the CD and the booklet together told a story that you could follow along with to “complete” your listening experience. it’s not to say that every time you listen to the album, you look at the booklet, but now the album is more than just music in your ears, it’s something physical. something tangible. you listen to the album and you don’t just hear, you see. you understand on a different level. there’s something special about that. since i was a little girl when i’d purchase CD singles, i’d put the disc in a CD player and open the booklet. run my fingers across the pages and take everything in.

i have a collection of vinyl and honestly, there are a few albums i’ve purchased solely based on their appearance. i have some of them displayed on my walls.

i’m in the music industry, blahblahblah, i understand that physical copies are a dying art or blahblahblah whatever, but i hope that the few of us with the “attention span” for it make enough of an impact so that physical copies never die out completely. i can’t even imagine. or i can, i just don’t want to.

OMFG march right back there and get Erykah Badu “Live” - I could (have, really) listen to her sing Chaka Khan’s “Stay” on repeat ’til my ears melt. Trust me.

Vinyl is alive and well, so I’m glad to see you enjoying it :) I work for a company that presses vinyl for major labels and we’ve already pressed over half a million records this year. It’s just an awesome way to enjoy fabulous music!

While you’re picking up new tunes, you also must check out The Duke and the King–Nothing Gold Can Stay, as well as The Avett Brothers–I and Love and You and anything else you can get your paws on. You will not be dissappointed.

  15. Caryn Says:

Great list! Though I have to admit I chuckled like a 7th grader at your Noah and the Whale typo - “Noah and the Whole”… haha

  16. Matt H Says:

I think you need to pick up the new Doughty.

  17. Monica Says:

What are you thinking of the new Tegan & Sara? I can’t stop listening… as I am sure will happen when your new album drops.

  18. HK Says:

That’s so sweet! I’m totally Jealous! Metric and some Ann & Nancy Wilson,”Darkness, Darkness” would be killer.

  19. Taylor Says:

How did you feel about Sainthood? I honestly can’t get enough of it, though in sort of a guilty pleasures kind of way. Not that that’s a bad thing, or anything…
