TEEF!

being home for more than three days at a time
takes some getting used to.
like space shuttle re-entry.
yesterday was a fix-it visit to the apple store.
today is a dentist appointment.
tomorrow=haircut.
one event a day is about my limit.

over the last 2 weeks, in between our shows,
mark has come up from LA to work on new songs.
and along with an unhealthy amount of disney
channel watching.. don’t ask.. we got some really
great shit done. no lyrics yet, but we have about
7 or 8 songs dialed in….
the lyrics are always the last ones to the party.
and until they come, i’m just chipping away.
accumulating bits and pieces. stealing.

oh, i did write what i think are the final lyrics for
the middle 8 of one of the new songs…
it’s currently my favorite lyric ever, but i’m sure that
will change…

the song has the working title, ‘alison krauss/robert plant’
the lyrics are:

‘it’s warm enough to trick the birds into singing,
it’s warm enough to give ‘em hope.
but we both know, it’s dead winter
and that season’s change… but we don’t’

can you dig on that sad shit?!
oh yes!

alright, that’s it for me..
i’m off to have my teeth scrubbed to a radiant
ivory… if you happen to be in downtown SF
this afternoon, look for the beacon that is my mouth.
the second sun. like they have on superman’s planet.

Have fun at the dentist. I always freak out when they get that hook thing out to scrape at the tartar build up…good luck Matt :P

  5. Shannon in Seattle Says:

Some effing sad and BRILLIANT shit right there, Matty. Now, sir, I do require your presence in Seattle at your earliest possible convenience. It’s beautiful here and we love you. And heyyy, mega airplay right now too, for Come On Get Higher. Also, I recommend reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies because it’s Jane Austen + zombies and how can that mathematical calculation amount to anything BUT awesome!

  6. Hannah Says:

This, like the others, was a fun read and made me give a little chuckle. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Lissa Closz Says:

Are you working on another soul crushing album? Never before have I been so in love with an artist’s work even when it rips my heart from my chest and stomps on it. That’s talent, man.
    :-D

  8. Christianna Says:

Hi Matt. I have been to two of your show in sf and I have to say, I’ve never laughed and sang so much all at once. I noticed on your tour schedule that there are no sf dates scheduled. My favorite venue is the Warfield and I am dying to see you again. Any plans maybe to have an unscheduled show there sometime this year? I turned my best friend on to you and she would love to see you live. Oh ya, have fun at the dentist today! Glad you’re taking care of that gorgeous smile!

  9. RACQUEL Says:

I’m surprised that lyrics are ‘the last to the party’ since you blog so effortlessly.

I hated that Krauss/Plant sand-in-my-ass album. made me think of slitting my wrists.

  10. Maddie Says:

haha. I’m officialy diggin’ on that shit right there. and absolutely deciding that this is why you’re amazing.

Holy cripes, i’ve seen you in concert 3 times already, and I can’t wait to try and see you this weekend in Denver. Im leaving for Chicago on Saturday night, so you your Studio C session on Saturday, and i’ll have my Matt fix for right now.

  13. sinona Says:

  14. katrina Says:

I’ve been thinking about this (the lyrics, not the teefs) and I wonder if it *should* be not easy? I mean, if you’re doing it right, or doing it well, really reaching (or diggning or clawing) for the right words is certainly tough but probably the best way to do it.

We’re all exposed to so much music, so many songs, so much media and input, and I’m sure that lots of people have had the experience where you hear a song for the first time and you kind of anticipate and know what the next line will be, what the next words will be. I would rather be surprised - I’d rather be delighted by the turn of a phrase or the choice of a word or the ability of a songwriter to say something so perfect and evocative in a way that NEVER would have occured to me. It’s a weird combination of perfectly phrased and uniquely worded and impossibly universal all at the same time. It’s almost like having the ability to make the counter-intuitve seem natural and perfect.

On the one hand, I’m sorry that it’s hard or a struggle or a plod or frustrating, but on the other hand, I think you do it so well. It must be transcendent for you when it finally fits. I hope you keep giving us that.

  15. d. Says:

Totally out of left field but…

Do you have a cousin that is a chiropractor? With the whole dentist, haricut, etc… thing… Well, it reminded me of all the mundane stuff that we as people do from day to day. Not too long ago my cousin said that your cousin was her chiropractor so I thought I’d check in and see if she was full of crap! lol

  16. Caroline Says:

I am such a fan of you.

  17. sh Says:

  21. sherry Says:

Hey Matt - loving the blog. However, in Bahamas, Teef is a word used to describe what happens when someone steals your stuff. It’s used as a verb - someone teefed my cell phone - AGAIN!! I was worried that you’ve been robbed. Glad to know you’re only going for a cleaning. Forever loyal!!

    Sherry

  22. Laura Says:

I can’t believe I will be out of town when you finally come back to Toronto! Oh well, at least I will be on a Mediterranean cruise as consolation. Love the new lyrics Matt.

  23. Carol Says:

Can’t wait for the rest!!! Looking forward to seeing you back in Allentown, PA this August. Last time I saw you was two years ago, when you played at my daughter’s high school… gave your friends directions (very good ones!) to Starbucks.

  24. Lea Says:

Those lyrics kinda sounds like a reference to global warming…i dig it :-)

  29. Gina Says:

Disney channel is some good shit - and I admit I even catch myself watching it without my boys! Wizards of Waverly has to be my fav. and I do like iCarly too on Nickelodeon. Stuff that is so simple makes me happy at the oddest hours. Artists gotta find inspiration somewhere :)

  30. Jillian Says:

Nice lyrics. Well done. But then again, I love all of your music… :)

  31. Kelly Says:

Wow. You are quite an artist. I am going to be in Chicago this weekend with friends. I hope your concert at the zoo isn’t sold out! I would love to hear you live!

  32. Lynne Says:

    Hey Matt!
So your name has been floating around the bay area radio stations and I’ve been like… what’s going on??! And then I found out youre having a concert in SJ. I am so excited. Its super crazy but you are for some reason a much more approachable star. Anyways, I absolutly LOVE Some Mad Hope and I listened to it frequently on my ancient cd player. Your are fabulous. So, thanks!

  33. Chelsea Says:

Can I just say Matt, that I saw you a couple weeks ago at the Basilica Block Party and aside from your fantastic performance, your whole opening the concert with the existential crisis. Hannah Montana stuff, well that did it for me. Loved it! So not to sound too creepy, which if I am sorry, but I’m now not only in love with your music, but I have to admit I love you and you humor as well!

  34. margaux Says:

You are the coolest person i know …. except i dont know you, can we please fix that COME TO RALEIGH NC!!!!!!

  35. Arielle Says:

    Lovin the lyrics.
I smell a next big hit coming :)

  36. Larissa Says:

    how about these lyrics?

    Watching the snow melt
    oh how your tears fell
    Like rain
    Piercing my skin

    Cold and alive
    With a stinging pain inside
    Changing and rearranging.

    Emotions flying away
    Lingering voices
    Whispers turn into prayers
    Wishes
    Desires
    My Passport into the night.

    Visions of you
    Landmarks in my heart
    As I close my eyes.

All I see is my dreams
    Shaking me through my core
Are you the one I’m looking for?

    …What do you think?
    Larissa Vuolo
