fried.
dough.
is.
the.
greatest.
thing.
ever.
made.
by.
humans.
that’s my haiku.
a bit of liberty with the form, sure…
but i’m a maverick.
look out william carlos williams.
went to cafe du monde last night.
new orleans really knows their way
around the powdered sugar and
the deeply fried dough… yes they do.
we have to install a fry-o-lator on the bus….
i need it. i can’t go back.
a fry-o-lator… and a treadmill.
they should just sell them as a team.
we are in austin now.
a nice day of tiny bike riding, record
shopping, and whole foods-ing (new verb).
next stop rock.

Matt, I am super psyched that you’ve started posting more journal entries. I felt that it was something that had been lacking the past couple years. Nothing gets you threw the day better than a Matt Blog Entry!

Fried dough. Got to be a southern thing. My mom made it for me as a child. I remember her even using canned biscuits when no time for scratch dough. She would cut the whole out of the center, my fav and deep fry. We had a choice of powdered sugar or chocolate syrup. Yum! A poor mans Beignet, LOL!
I enjoyed the read and memories it stirred. Take care and…
See you at The Wharf next weekend!

Your gig was the climax at tonight’s show. You are a fantastic performer. I hope Austin treated you real nice. Great “Barton Springs” reference.
May 11th, 2009 at 1:14 am
your Austin performance was Amazing!! not to mention laughing my ass off in between songs!! awesome job. you have a new avid fan of your music. I only wish I could have gotten a pic with you. You’re the only one I didn’t get one with. You’ll have to fix that next time you’re in the great city of Austin, TX!! ;p
p.s.
love your modernized haiku.
May 11th, 2009 at 7:22 am
OMG! The best beignets ever! I definitely think you need the fry-o-lator on your bus…and you should sell them at your shows too…
May 11th, 2009 at 11:07 am
i.
can’t.
wait.
to see you again.
mr. nathanson.
como, tomorrow, the blue note.
i’ll be at the front balcony,
with a big SMILE on my face.
your songs break my heart (been there).
your presence onstage makes me laugh.
beignets are sweet
but your voice is sweeter

when in a pinch and there are only Hawaiian grill places around - go in and ask for the malasadas - fried dough goodness Hawaiian style.
May 11th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
mmmm Cafe du Monde Begneits! I get their Beignet Mix boxes by the case… my kids love them…
For the kids…
Come on get sugar high
Lick your lips
Taste and desire
in the sizzle of the fryer
Just pour the powdered sugar
And drown me in love…
ok so I’m not THAT clever… thats why you get paid the big bucks and we all dance wherever we are when your music comes on… thank you…

May 12th, 2009 at 11:14 am
Hey Matt..I saw you in Tampa, FL like 4-5 years ago in a small club. I totally think you should come play in Philadelphia..they have good food here for sure!!! And I mean its Philadelphia…so come play!
May 12th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
best poetry i ever read. hands down.
May 12th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Haha! The fried dough sounds disturbingly yummy. Reminds me of Indian fry bread topped with powdered sugar and honey at the 4th Avenue Street Fair when I lived in Tucson, AZ. But whatever happened to gluten-free?
We don’t have Whole Foods in Montana, but we do have something at least as good in Missoula- the Good Food Store. When you come play Missoula one of these days, you’ll be good to go on healthy food there and any of your angry vegetarian entourage will also be covered as well. And since it’s a non-profit that gives lots of money back to the community, you’ll be supporting community charities with your purchase.
May 12th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
agreed.
fried dough is pretty “ducking” awesome.
P.S. heard “Wedding Dress” on One Tree Hill last night!!!
i freaked and jumped for joy as i sang along and had to rewind the last 10 minutes and watch it again
May 14th, 2009 at 9:27 am
Hey Matt, it’s “Princess” from New Orleans … LOVED the show and LOVE your music! So glad yall added the stop in NOLA to the tour. Thanks also to Robin for getting us on the bus - made my night!
May 14th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Fried dough is sooo southern! We used to get it every year at the TX state fair! BTW, we are road tripping to CO to see you in June and I can’t wait!!! Have fun ’til then!
May 14th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

Who is William Carlos William?
May 15th, 2009 at 6:15 am
I cannot believe i live in the south and have never had fried dough…sounds like something I’d enjoy though, especially if you liked it!

May 15th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
I am a more recent fan I live on Cape Cod and I will be at the Melody Tent on June 13. I am so excited! I hope you do meet and greets with fans because I really want the chance to make an ass out of myself (”Hi my name is ….duh…OMG AAAAHHHH”) anyway (staying on-topic) I love fried dough but to the thought of having a machine with boiling hot oil on a bus it seems kind of dangerous , I mean what if you had to brake really hard and it sloshes all over and … ok gonna stop rambling now as it’s almost 120 AM here on Cape Cod. Good night sweet dreams and I look forward to seeing you in concert on 6/13
May 18th, 2009 at 8:09 am

Saw this on a T-Shirt:
Haiku’s are easy.
But sometimes they don’t make sense.
Refrigerator.
Couldn’t say it better.
May 20th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Dearest Matt,
Cant wait to see you headlining again!

May 21st, 2009 at 12:24 pm
Just wanted to thank you for being so nice to my little boy at the meet and greet in Huntsville (ya know-during the monsoon!) You officially moved passed the silver men on the Wharf to his number one “what I want to be when I grow up” list. I would maybe even let him take candy from you! We are big fans and have culivated you quite a following in Huntsvegas with the 13 & under demo and the well.. my age & over crowd. Thanks again!
May 29th, 2009 at 7:50 am
I lived in New Orleans, for, oh, about 4 weeks, and the only thing I can say I missed was Cafe du Monde.
I’m just sayin’……

May 29th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
william carlos williams..somewhere my old advisor/english prof. is reading this post salivating and debating falling in love with you. Can’t wait to see you on the road again. Always the best shows.
May 30th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
I think you should know
that
your “journal” entries
make me laugh
more than anything else…
possibly ever.
Which, I have to say,
is quite embarrassing when
you are reading them
all by yourself
and you end up laughing
out loud for a solid 10 minutes.
Or something like that.
Please keep blogging
(and music-ing),
because
you are great.
No. Greater than great.
June 1st, 2009 at 7:22 pm
In New Orleans, they call it beignet. In the rest of the south, it’s called a funnel cake (found at any state fair, carnival, race track, etc.).
Caught your set at the Patriotic Festival in Virginia Beach. I was lucky enough to have a front row seat, not that I was sitting in it. You were awesome! I’m going to try to catch the show in Richmond next week.
June 3rd, 2009 at 7:52 am
Matt has now become my voice of reason on my blogs…lol…everything is What would Matt Nathanson do? Your journal entries crack me up because you are a real person and I respect that!!Who else writes about I Carly and Van Helsing? Though I have used your opinion in a blog about sea glass and how I don’t get Twilight…ick…
June 3rd, 2009 at 7:54 am
What about Star Trek and Wolverine eh? You are “our people”…come to a BBQ in Washington Township New Joisey! You’ll love it!!
June 4th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
The downtown Austin Whole Foods is THE BEST! I wish you were coming thru Indianapolis again… sigh.
June 11th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Fried dough is delicious… and a staple every summer when I go up north to the tip of cape cod.
p.s. come back to philly soon, it’s been too long since I’ve seen you!
June 15th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
