finished.
12 songs.
plus a few extra for later.
all mixed, sequenced and ready for tomorrow morning’s mastering date.
and once that happens, it’s all about preparing for the launch.
this has been a long, long, long trip.
i know you know this.
but seriously.
i have pre-production demos of some of these songs dating back to ‘04.
it has felt brutal sometimes.
like being in labor for 3 years straight.
and now, i’m at the end.
i just listened to the record 3 times in a row
and i have to tell you, there is nothing more i could do.
if someone gave me the chance to make it better, i’d say i couldn’t.
in 6 months, i’m sure i’ll be reinvigorated and start writing again.
and know how i want the next one to sound. and know where we

could expand on things. and stretch and push.
but it feels like that’s the natural way things roll.
that the next record will be better because mark and i have gotten
better at writing songs. and understanding production
and band dynamics…
but not because we missed something this time.
right now, i’m spent. and it’s rad.
i have never felt like this after a record.
it’s a complete thought.
and the songs arc like the last 3 years of my life.
which is rough… but totally fulfilling.
this is the record it should be. no more. no less.

and thanks to all of you for the album titles.
there were actually some pretty kick ass ones in there.
but i think i’ll save ‘thank you, mark wahlberg’ for the greatest hits.

i think boston’s “boston” is a perfect pop record.
if you don’t own it, you should download the whole thing.
it’s like… $7 on itunes.
or go out and buy the remastered CD.
the liner notes are killer.
people shit on boston and say that they started corporate rock
and talk about how it’s just cheesy, shiny, candy.
i’m pretty sure those people have never enjoyed their lives.

tonight we watched batman begins.
i saw it when it came out in the theatre,
and i’ve seen it on cable, like, 100 times…
but tonight was the first time i’ve ever noticed
that katie holmes’ nipples are pretty much
hard for the last third of the movie.
actually, if memory serves, i’m pretty sure

they were hard on the movie poster too.
this must have been on purpose. right?
the director, the great christopher nolan, HAD
to have known this was happening…
i’m assuming that at some point, he had a
conversation with K.H. that went something like this:
‘hey, katie… great take! you totally had me believing that
you were dazed and drugged up on psycho-tropic hallucinogenic
powder. way to go! you had the perfect blend of terrified and
confused. let’s do another one, just like that….um, but this time
can you do me a favor and just pinch your nipples for me. yeah,
i know, sounds crazy, but i really think that the only thing this
scene is missing is a set of hard tits… thanks. ok, you good?

she was just trying to shake off the
type casting of dawson’s creek.

just trying to navigate the rocky terrain
between t.v. sensation and movie star supernova.
i’m pretty sure it was right after this movie
that she started ‘dating’ tom cruise.
and i’m no detective, but i’d be willing to bet that
her spiral down into cuckoo village began here.
how many times do you think this happened to blossom?
or tootie, from facts of life?
or gary coleman?
that poor son of a bitch probably has to have a bag of ice
with him everywhere he goes.
so where’s the E true hollywood story on this?

speaking of injustice, here’s the real reason for this journal entry…
i’m having trouble naming the record.
as i think i said in the last entry, the title i love… everyone else hates.

i still might go with it.. i mean ‘achtung baby?’ ‘ok computer’
‘baby one more time?’ all the great albums have unconventional titles.
point is. i’m unsure. and open to suggestions.
much like, i’m sure, katie holmes was during the filming of ‘batman begins.’
so fire away. post you’re ideas. give me some direction.
